At GT Motive UK, our focus has always been on helping insurers, repairers and the wider automotive claims industry work smarter through technology, data and innovation. Behind that vision is Managing Director David Vella, whose leadership has helped establish GT Motive UK as one of the highest-performing regions within the global business.
We sat down with David to discuss his leadership style, what motivates him, the challenges facing the repair industry, and where he sees the future of vehicle repair technology heading.
How would your team describe your greatest strength as a leader, and what leadership challenge have you had to work hardest to overcome?
My team would probably say my biggest strength is my energy and vision. I bring a lot of drive into the business, but I also try to give clear direction on where we’re going and why.
At the same time, I’m very approachable and I trust people to get on with the job. I don’t believe in over-managing. If you’ve got the right people, you empower them and let them deliver.
The flip side of that is that I naturally operate at a high tempo. Not everyone moves at that speed, so I’ve had to become more conscious of bringing people with me, rather than simply driving forward. Leadership, for me, has evolved from pushing performance to creating an environment where performance happens naturally.
Looking back over your career, what professional achievement are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of building a profitable, successful, value-added UK business for GT Motive with a highly engaged and knowledgeable team.
We’ve created one of the highest-performing regions globally, not by adding complexity, but by focusing on value, relationships and consistency. Seeing the team grow, take ownership and genuinely care about what we’re building is the part I’m most proud of.
It’s never just about revenue. It’s about building something that people believe in.
As GT Motive UK continues to grow, how do you keep your team aligned and focused on the same goals?
Alignment comes from consistency, simplicity and repetition.
We’re very clear on what we stand for: accuracy, efficiency and delivering real value to the customer. More importantly, we connect that to why it matters, whether that’s helping insurers operate more effectively or making life easier for repairers on the ground.
As we grow, I spend more time communicating than anything else. Not just strategy, but context. When people understand the “why”, alignment takes care of itself.
What does success look like for GT Motive UK over the next few years?
Success for us in the UK is about becoming the central intelligence layer within the claims ecosystem.
That means connecting insurers, repairers, engineers and suppliers through one seamless, data-driven workflow. With AI playing an increasingly important role, we’re moving beyond simply estimating damage to predicting outcomes, optimising decisions and reducing friction throughout the entire repair journey.
Commercially, we’ll continue to grow, but the real goal is to become indispensable to the market.
If you could give one piece of advice to your younger self at the start of your career, what would it be?
Focus less on proving yourself and more on building relationships.
Early in my career, I was very driven to achieve, and that’s important, but long-term success comes from trust, consistency and how you treat people.
I’d also say don’t be afraid to think bigger. Most limitations are self-imposed.
Every business faces difficult moments. What keeps you motivated when challenges arise?
I’ve been through enough challenges, both personally and professionally, to know that difficult periods are where growth happens.
What keeps me motivated is perspective. When you step back, most problems are solvable. And when you’re building something meaningful with good people around you, that gives you energy.
I also stay very focused on progress. Small wins compound quickly.
What do you see as the biggest challenges facing British vehicle repairers today, and how is GT Motive helping them overcome those challenges?
The biggest challenges right now are cost pressure, increasing complexity, data accuracy and speed.
Vehicles are becoming more advanced, parts are more expensive and repair processes are more demanding. At the same time, customers expect faster turnaround times and insurers are under increasing pressure to control costs.
Where we help is by bringing greater accuracy and automation into the process. Better data, better estimating and connected workflows reduce friction, eliminate waste and ultimately make the whole system more efficient.
It’s about giving repairers tools that genuinely support them, not slow them down.
The automotive repair sector has changed significantly in recent years. How have those changes influenced GT Motive UK’s strategy and direction?
The industry is going through significant consolidation and digital transformation.
Larger insurers, the consolidation of repair networks, increasing investment in technology, more complex supply chains and a growing demand for data-led decisions all play directly into our strengths.
For us, it’s accelerated the move towards AI, integration and end-to-end connectivity. We’re no longer just a software provider; we’re becoming a strategic partner in how claims are managed.
And that’s where the real opportunity lies.
Looking ahead
As the automotive repair industry continues to evolve, GT Motive remains committed to helping the market navigate increasing complexity through smarter technology, connected data and meaningful innovation.
Under David’s leadership, the focus extends beyond developing software. It’s about building long-term partnerships, empowering customers and creating solutions that make the entire claims and repair journey more efficient for everyone involved. With AI and intelligent automation continuing to transform the sector, GT Motive UK is well positioned to help shape what comes next.
