According to Thatcham Research, more than 70% of repair professionals identify the skills gap as a growing issue. With repair costs rising by around 50% between 2019 and 2024 as a direct result of increased vehicle complexity and the specialist expertise now required to repair them safely and effectively.

At the same time, data from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) indicates that around 16,000 roles remain unfilled across the automotive sector. With shortages particularly acute in body repair, paint and diagnostic roles, all of which directly impact a bodyshop’s ability to maintain throughput during peak demand periods.

Vehicle complexity is increasing faster than capability

Alongside the skills shortage, the technical complexity of modern vehicles continues to accelerate, driven by the widespread adoption of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), electrification and connected vehicle systems, which together introduce additional layers of repair complexity that must be accounted for at every stage of the repair journey.

As highlighted by industry insight and sector events such as the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event, today’s workshops are required to manage everything from advanced diagnostics and EV servicing through to software updates and calibration processes, meaning that even relatively minor repairs can now involve multiple technical interventions that weren’t required just a few years ago.

As a result, this creates a compounding challenge, where limited skilled resource must now deliver increasingly complex repairs, often requiring additional time, equipment and validation processes, which directly impacts productivity and repair cycle efficiency.

SERMI is changing access to critical repair data

A major development shaping the industry this summer is the introduction of security-related repair and maintenance information (SERMI), which is fundamentally changing how bodyshops access security-related vehicle data, particularly for functions such as key programming, immobiliser work and other protected systems.

As outlined by the National Body Repair Association, SERMI introduces a regulated framework for accessing this data, requiring repairers to obtain certification in order to carry out certain types of work, effectively placing key functions behind what has become known as the SERMI wall.

For bodyshops that aren’t prepared for this yet, SERMI has the potential to create a real risk of disruption, as lack of certification may limit access to essential repair information, delay repair processes and reduce the ability to complete certain jobs in-house, particularly those involving modern security systems.

Rising repair costs are putting pressure on profitability

As repair complexity increases and skilled labour remains in short supply, the cost of delivering repairs still continues to rise and adds additional pressure on bodyshop margins, particularly where fixed pricing agreements or insurer expectations do not fully reflect the true cost of modern repair processes.

According to Thatcham Research data, the average cost of vehicle repair has increased significantly in recent years, driven by the integration of advanced technology and the need for specialist repair methods, which in turn is influencing insurer behaviour, repair approval processes and overall claims economics. And as a result, this creates a challenging commercial environment whereby bodyshops must balance efficiency, quality and cost control, whilst also investing in the tools, training and processes required to remain competitive.

Workflow pressure and seasonal demands are colliding

Summer brings a predictable increase in vehicle usage, travel and accident frequency, however in the current environment, this seasonal demand is colliding with existing capacity constraints, creating a situation where bodyshops are operating at or beyond sustainable limits.

Then, with fewer skilled technicians available and more complex repairs required, many workshops are experiencing backlogs, extended repair times and increased pressure on operational workflows, particularly where estimating accuracy, parts availability and authorisation delays intersect, all of which results in a more fragile operating model where even small disruptions can have a disproportionate impact on overall performance.
